Riding a bicycle is not only a trend in densely populated areas. According to statistics, transporting your child on a bicycle is both eco-friendlier and safer compared to a car ride. A bicycle seat is thus absolutely compulsory. You should not forget that a cycle tour with a child changes your driving style on the bike. The additional weight especially affects the balance and the braking distance. Therefore please put emphasis on the necessary safety features when buying a bicycle seat. More information >
You probably already noticed two different versions of bicycle seats: Either they are fixed to the handlebar or in the back on the frame where your child sits on the carrier. Both models have advantages and disadvantages. The frontal fixation on the handlebar has the advantage that you always have your child in sight and are able to communicate with him directly. On the other hand, it has the disadvantage that he will not be protected against wind and rain. This kind of seat will impair your driving style considerably. That is one of the main reasons why these seats can only be used to a maximum weight of 15 kilogram. However, even if your child is still below that mark you should abstain from using it for safety reasons. They show a risk of injuries for you and your child.
The fixation in the back will help you to protect your child against wind or rain. A lot of seats of this type are made comfortably so that your child can even sleep during the ride. A good example is the Jockey Comfort by Britax Römer. This seat can be used up to a weight of 22 kilogram. A disadvantage of fixing the seat in the back is that you can neither use your carrier nor you are able to carry a backpack. A basket in the front should be a help there.
However, a seat in the back is the better choice for transporting your child. You should pay attention to putting the focal point to the back wheel though. The front wheel will thus be relieved and tend to lift. It is recommended to try riding around a bit before carrying your child. To simulate the weight you can use a fully packed backpack.
If you decided on a model you should place emphasis on important safety features. The following criteria need to be fulfilled for a proper bicycle seat:
Making longer rides more comfortable, the padding is a decisive factor when it comes to buying a bicycle seat. It should not be too thin. Well-known manufacturers of bicycle seats such as Britax-Römer or Hamax offer washable paddings. If you want to enable your child to sleep during a ride you need to choose a seat with an adjustable back rest.
A helmet is also compulsory for your child’s safety while riding. Some manufacturers even include a space for the helmet in the seat, so that your little one can comfortably lean back.
A lot of people decide for a seat which grows along since it can be used for a longer period of time. The back rests there can be pulled out and the footrests and belts are adjustable.
Before buying one you need to consider a lot of things. Sights should not be lowered in respect of safety. When it comes to the look you have several options. A lot of seats are comfortably designed and sufficiently padded. Adjustable back rests provide relaxation and if you plan to do shorter tours with your bike, a back rest without resting position is definitely enough.
