Just as you don't want to drink expired milk or eat a sandwich that has been left on the kitchen countertop overnight, you certainly don't want your child to eat foods that may have gone bad. Bacteria and germs grow easily and relatively quickly on food. Your child's stomach is much more sensitive than an adult's and can be easily irritated. Regardless of whether you buy baby food in the supermarket or prepare it yourself at home, it is important to know how to prepare, store and reheat it correctly and safely.
Baby food bought in the supermarket is usually packaged in a jar, plastic container or resealable bag and does not need to be refrigerated or frozen before opening. Like all other stored items (e.g. beans or spices), these foods usually have a shelf life of around 1 year. However, it is recommended to check the expiry date at regular intervals.
Homemade fresh baby food can be stored like any other fresh fruit or vegetables. After your purees have been cooked and processed, vegetables and fruits can stay in the refrigerator for up to 48-72 hours and in the freezer for a maximum of 3 months. Always make sure to store the freshly cooked baby food in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooling, as bacteria will start to grow at room temperature after these 2 hours. If you're making baby food with meat, poultry, or fish, make sure to refrigerate any leftovers and discard them if they're not used within 24 hours of making them.
Please note that the refrigerator is set to around 5 - 7 ° C.
Glass Containers: Glass is a popular choice for baby jars for good reason: it's easy to clean and to sterilise. Glass containers are available with both a screw cap and a click cap. Regardless of which version you opt for, it is important that the lids seal the containers airtight and watertight.
Plastic containers: Plastic containers are cheaper than those made of glass and therefore suitable for everyone on a smaller budget. If you prefer plastic containers for storing food, it is important to make sure that they are BPA-free and also come with an airtight and leak-proof lid.
Multi-portion containers made of silicone: With multi-portion containers, you can easily portion homemade baby food and store it in the freezer for a long time. Since silicone is particularly flexible, the portions can be easily removed from the mould as required.
Squeeze bottles: Squeeze bottles are soft, re-fillable baby bottles that feature a wide opening and can be easily filled with homemade baby food. They are suitable for storing and freezing, but also for travelling. This great storage option is fun for both kids and adults.
