Make sure that your baby is sound asleep while you are not in the same room as him/her. Certainty is given through a baby phone which forwards every noise immediately to you. The condition is that you get a device which reacts sensitive to every noise and functions reliable. Manufacturers offer the most different models in different price ranges.

The first baby phones on the market were analog devices with which you were only able to observe your child acoustically. Today, such a device is still on the market. However, they are not recommended because they only provide an acoustic observation, as written before. Furthermore it happened, that frequencies overlapped and with others and you suddenly heard your neighbor’s child instead of your own.
That won’t happen with the DECT baby phones, because signals are directly transferred to the recipient. Digital devices offer to monitor your child. Once a certain noise level is passed, the transmitter unit automatically turns on and sends a current picture to the mobile receiving station. Some models are equipped with a swiveling camera which enables you to get a panoramic sight in your child’s room.
Our tip: Decide on a baby phone with a colour display because these models give you a sharper image reproduction.
If you choose a baby phone with intercom functionality, you do not even have to get into your baby’s room to calm him/her down. If the baby’s feeling comfortable and is not hungry or thirsty, a mother’s voice is often enough to get it back to sleep again. Beyond that, some models calm with playing a “well-tried” lullaby. Other devices are equipped with an additional night light or even a motion sensor. The transfer starts as soon as your baby is anxiously sleeping or just waking up. You will then be able to be in your child’s room before he/she opens his/her eyes. The temperature sensor lets you know if your baby is feeling well or not.
This invention can definitely be marked as revolutionary: A baby phone which raises an alarm as soon as your baby does not breathe for more than 20 seconds. The respiratory movements are measured through a sensor mat that is placed under the baby. Such a model takes a parent biggest concern and protects the baby against a "phenomenon", which previously displaced parents in fear and terror. A purely acoustic device was not able to protect babies against cot death, because the child does not cry in that case and the device does not turn on therefore.
A baby monitor app appears reasonable at first glance. It can be installed for less money, sometimes even for free, downloaded from an app store and onto a smartphone or tablet, which is placed on the cot. If a pre-configured sound level will be exceeded in the room, the app rings your smartphone or home phone.
A problem here is that the stationed tablet or smartphone can only transmit images of the child to the recipient, if the room is adequately lighted. Is it dark in the room, you have to expect a lousy image quality. Surely you do not want to disturb your baby’s sleep and turn off the light at night. A modern baby phone with video function, however, has an infrared night vision camera. It gives excellent images, even when it's pitch black in the children’s room.
Our tip: Don’t trust an uncertain app. In this case, it is more of a negative trend, even if the app store promises the "pie in the sky". Because in the end, what happens if the phone or tablet will be disconnected from the internet and your baby is just then in distress?
If you choose a baby phone, you should opt for a quality product that works flawlessly and safely in an "emergency". Therefore, do not comply ostensibly with the cost, but look on the functionality you need. The money spent is useful if it is invested in your baby’s welfare and safety.
