In the first year of your child’s life, you lay the foundations for a healthy diet by choosing the right baby food. You will probably want to breastfeed, as breast milk not only contains all the necessary nourishment, but also protects your baby from infections in the early weeks. At three months, babies start to display a marked interest in exploring their surroundings, and at five to six months it’s time to start weaning them onto solids. That first spoonful of carrot puree marks a new, fascinating stage in your baby’s development. More information >
Mom Sarah takes a quick glance at the dinner table. She’s a little excited, as today her son Tim will be getting his first taste of baby porridge. For the past five months, Tim has been happy just drinking breast milk. But he’s becoming more mobile and inquisitive by the day, and his diet of breast milk is now going to be supplemented by solids for the first time.
Although the health food store stocks a wide range of baby foods, Sarah decides to make the porridge herself. She has opted for the combined steamer & blender from Philips Avent. This gentle cooking method preserves vitamins, and Sarah can be sure that Tim gets fresh vegetables as well as quality meat at a later stage. After steaming, there’s no need to transfer the contents to another vessel, as the device is simply turned upside down for pureeing. How will Tim cope with the transition from breastfeeding to solids?
A few minutes later, Sarah rushes to the cot. Tim has woken up and is telling her at the top of his voice that he’s hungry. Sarah picks him up and sits down at the table. She makes a first attempt at feeding Tim the new baby porridge – but Tim turns his head away. He searches for his mom’s breast. Lovingly, Sarah tries it again. This time, Tim licks the spoon and seems to take a liking to it. Sarah has bought several feeding spoons from Chicco and Avent, as soon Tim will be making tentative attempts at feeding himself. The soft tip and flexible handle prevent any risk of injury, and the cheerful colors catch Tim’s attention. When he’s older, he’ll be able to feed himself using the ergonomically shaped training cutlery and training plate from Avent, which features amusing pictures. Twenty minutes later, Tim is full and drifts off to sleep. Sarah doesn’t need to wash up by hand, as all the cutlery and crockery is dishwasher-safe. While Sarah is getting the evening bath ready for Tim, she tells Dad Marcus about Tim taking his first taste of solid food. “I’ll feed him at the weekend,” says Markus while he’s spreading out the bath towel.
