You are here: Home page Nursing & Feeding Feeding Baby food
During pregnancy, your child receives his/her nourishment through the umbilical cord and after giving birth, a mother regularly feeds him/her through nursing. Up to the point at which your baby is able to decide on his/her own what to eat, parents and other parts of the family decide what is on the menu. Look out for balanced baby food which uses high-quality raw materials as basis. It’s important to think about some issues in nourishment beforehand. Do you want the classical milk-fruit-mash or bio food, which products are the best for your baby? More information >
Breast milk provides important nutrients to your baby. Nursing helps to built up your baby’s gut flora and strengthens his/her immune system. However, not every woman is able to nurse her child and thus, formula is the right choice. It either serves as additional food or sole food. Special food, initial milk, bio or complete special food can be used from birth on. The combination of valuable and biological ingredients is digestible to your child. If he/she reacts allergic to certain baby foods, you can use hypo-allergenic formula. Pre and initial milk can serve as food source for the first six months. Follow-on milk (2 and 3) is richer in calories and has another composition as breast milk.
Watch out for the ingredients of the products in related to 3-MCDP polyunsaturated fatty acids, calories and iron content. Stick with the demands, the product has to be prepared fresh for every meal.
The change to supplementary food as addition for nursing is an important part in life for your child. At this point of time you are not only nursing your child, but also giving solid food. When do you know it is time to give supplementary food? Experts agree: Supplementary food should be introduced the earliest at the fifth months, and the latest at the seventh month of life. If you’re baby gains weight slower than he/she should, it’s good hint that you can start with feeding supplementary food.
If he/she does not show you to need more liquid foods, you should definitely start to feed him/her at the seventh month. At this point of time your little one needs more nutrients than those which are received through breast milk.
If your baby is ready for solid food, breast milk or pre-milk will not deliver enough nutrients anymore. It’s time for giving supplementary food then. In doing so, you should proceed stepwise and replace the “breast milk meals” little by little through baby food. Look out for bio ingredients and decide for quality. Choose between a baby mash which is prepared freshly for any meal and vegetables/fruit mixtures as well as food from the bottle.
You can choose from milk-cereal-mash to milk mash with fruits to Bircher muesli. Food from the bottle can be varied with fruits and yoghurt, or in the evening with carrots, vegetables with organic beef and other types. Look and check out for yourself which one your baby likes the most and which he/she does not.
Cereal mash is ideal for a healthy nutrition. It has enough calcium, B-vitamins and mineral nutrients. A fruit-cereal-mash, suitable from 6th month, delivers nutrients and vitamins and does not stress the metabolism with too much protein. Especially suitable for supplementary food is oats, it well-digestible and has a high portion of B1, iron and calcium. Those who want to feed their child vegetarian should use oats, rye and sorghum. Alternative corn fruits or raw corn should be relinquished in the first year of life. They are only hard digestible for the gastrointestinal tract of your baby.
