A few weeks after his birth, a baby already begins to discover the world around him. He will grasp for things which are in his reach, put them in his mouth and learns the difference between soft and hard, cold and warm surfaces. Soon the baby will not only sense the toy and put it into the mouth, but also learn to tell shapes and colours apart. This learning process can be supported with a suitable toy.

Children get to know the world in a playful way

Once your baby starts to build big towers of Lego bricks, he will understand the laws of gravity. If you look at a picture book with your child and read it out, he will learn new words and things. With the right toy, you will support your child’s development – that is why you should know which toy is suitable for which age: A newborn, who has just started to grasp things, needs something else to play with than a two-year old which likes the most to sit in the sandbox: Our list will help you to find the right toy for your baby.

Which toy is suitable for which age:

  • in the first half year: mobile, music box, stroller chain
  • in the second half year: rattle, gripping ring, soft book, first toys by Lego-Duplo
  • at the age of two: picture books, balance bikes, wooden bricks, finger paint, cuddly toys, bricks by Lego-Duplo
  • at the age of three: trains, tractors and a fire brigade, dolls, tricycles, swings and toys for role plays, e.g. by Playmobil
  • at the age of four: card and board games, picture books, filigree worlds of Playmobil, beads
  • at the age of five: children love the first Lego Technic and Lego City, books for reading out, draw and handicraft things, balls and bicycles

Sensing and seeing are important in the first half year of life

In the first weeks of his young life, a baby needs nothing to play, however, will learn to get to know to light and shade, noises and voices. A music box, a mobile or a stroller chain are the first toys with which you support your little one’s attention just as his sense of feeling and seeing.

6 to 12 months: Your baby will learn how to grasp

Your little one will now grasp for everything which is within his reach. Toys for grasping and rattling are suitable now. That can be a rattle, but also a soft ball or soft book. The first toys by Lego-Duplo are suitable for the bathtub and cuddly blanket, so that your little one always has something to grasp. When the first teeth are coming, a teething ring which cools and stills the requirement for chewing will help.

Toys for children aged one year: Your baby starts to walk

At this age your child will pull up on the furniture and make his first steps. Robust and colourful toys will be suitable for this age, like tear-proof picture books, wooden bricks and finger paint. As soon as your child starts to walk, he will love toys which can be pushed or pulled.

Age two: Doing everything like mama and papa

Children at this age want to do everything their mama and papa do: They cook in a child’s kitchen, shovel sand in the sandbox with a digger or want to drive the locomotive themselves. Their world becomes bigger and bigger with the toys by Playmobil and the plenty sets by Lego Duplo. A balance bike will help to train the sense of balance and the vocabulary will be expanded daily with picture books.

Movement is happening at the age of three

Your child preferably likes to run riot outside, roars over the pavement with his tricycle and flies high on a swing. There are a lot of toys for your little whirlwind. At this age role plays are also a big thing. He will patch up cuddly toys and mama with a doctor’s kit, invent own stories for the Punch figures and reenact the moment he went shopping with you. The plenty play worlds by Lego and Playmobil give your child the possibility to reenact and design the most different scenarios on his own.

At the age of four other kids are involved

At this age your child will love to play with other children who are the same age. He will understand card games like the blame game and first board games. Once your child turns four, you will start to marvel at his creativity: Children at this age shape their own worlds while playing, put blankets over chairs and tables, built hollows and castles. If you give your child a big carton he will built a fantasy house. Toys by Lego and Playmobil may be more filigree now.

At the age of five: school will start soon

Right before your child starts to go to school he will know incredibly many things and likes to bombard you with questions. He wants to know where the babies come from, how to read the clock and which animals live deep down in the sea. Picture books for reading out with which you can explain the world to your little one are very popular at this age. Also crayons, magnet letters, paper and things for handicraft are very suitable for children of this age. Ball games will support the motor skills just like it is with riding a bicycle or sticking together the Playmobil scenes.
